Hey Sakura - I love your videos but I have a piece of advice for you. I've been playing since 1984 (studio/session musician) and I noticed that you and I hold our picking hands very similar. I have developed arthritis in the first two fingers of that hand that required surgery and will never be pain-free. I see your knuckles get pretty white sometimes so I would suggest that you lighten your grip a little and make sure to stretch and massage your right hand frequently. I hope you never have the problems that I've developed though I wouldn't change a thing about my career. Good luck in the future and Sayōnara watashi no yūjin.

Yeah, I've had those palm cramps after playing for a few hours. I used to hold the pick with my thumb and index finger only, similar to the way George Lynch picks, and now both of those fingers are bent away from each other. Look at Lynch play in any video from the last ten years and you can see the arthritis in both of his hands. I've read interviews with several guitar legends (from Eddie Van Halen to Ritchie Blackmore) who have had to have surgery from joint and tendon damage. I wish someone had warned me when I was younger. Cheers.
Walamonga 1313 - This might be a little long but bear with me. I can't say there is necessarily a "right" way to hold a pick, as every player is completely different, but I would suggest not squeezing too hard. I would also say it might be a good idea to support your index finger by holding your middle finger directly against it. I used to hold my right hand very similar to '80s-era George Lynch (I know - I mentioned it earlier). I held the pick between my index and thumb with my other fingers fanned out. I'd always heard that was a slower way of picking than holding your hand almost in a fist but I found it more natural and comfortable. The problem is, after 34 years of playing (anywhere from 2-6 hours a day), the pressure of squeezing the pick has done joint damage to both fingers and caused severe arthritis. I'm 48 now and can't completely make a fist without quite a bit of stiffness and pain. That's after two surgeries. So, if you play casually or hold the pick gently you probably won't have an issue but if you might be doing any of the things I've done please try to make an adjustment to save yourself A LOT of pain later on.
